Winter Vegetables - Discover how some of our most healthful vegetables survive outside in the winter, and how root cellars once kept many others fresh in the coldest months. Children will learn through stories and taste a selection of cabbages, roots, and hardy greens. Amazing Grains - For centuries, humans have been growing and cultivating many different kinds of grains. Learn about the wheat that has shaped Minnesota, and the other small grains our state is proud to produce: wild rice, oats and rye. Wild Rice - Minnesota’s native grain has been a source of sustenance and pride for generations of Native Americans and settlers. Students will learn about harvesting wild rice, and explore the plant’s characteristics and traditions. Potatoes, more than Fries - Follow the amazing journey of the potato from South America over Europe and back to our country! We explore the colorful variety of potatoes grown around us for healthy winter meals. Activities include acting out a potato plant, tasty recipes, and potato art.
